Europa Factoids
  • Its surface is composed of water ice and scientists feel that there may be liquid salty water underneath.
  • It is possible that there is some form of microscopic life on Europa.
  • Because it may have liquid water, it may be possible to send a manned mission to Europa one day.
  • Europa is slightly smaller than our Moon.
  • Europa is the smoothest object in the solar system.
  • It has a series of striking dark streaks crisscrossing the entire globe.
  • It has an atmosphere containing oxygen, one of only five moons  that we know do, in our solar system. (The others are Io, Ganymede, Titan and Triton.)
  • It has very few impact craters, only five have been discovered so far. This may mean that Europa is relatively young, perhaps only 30 million years old.
  • It has a diameter of 3,138 km.
  • The surface of Europa is very bright, about 5 times brighter than our Moon.
